Why panel legibility is a printing problem
A Nutrition Facts panel is the most typographically demanding element on any package: hairline rules, condensed type, bold-to-regular contrast, all at sizes measured in points. On the wrong substrate or a low-resolution press, bold headings plug up and thin rules break apart. We print panels on equipment and materials selected for exactly this kind of fine work, and prepress checks stroke weights and minimum type sizes before anything runs. The panel that passed review on screen is then the panel a shopper can read on the shelf.

The current Nutrition Facts format, element by element
The FDA overhauled the Nutrition Facts label in the biggest revision since the panel was created, and labels built from old templates fail review on details like these. We lay out all of them to spec:
- Calories, made prominent: larger, bolder calorie declarations than the old format allowed.
- Added sugars: declared in grams and as a percent Daily Value, indented under total sugars.
- Updated nutrient list: vitamin D and potassium are required; vitamins A and C are no longer mandatory.
- Realistic serving sizes: updated reference amounts that reflect real-world eating habits, with package-size rules that can trigger per-container labeling.
- Dual-column triggers: multi-serving packages that could be consumed in one sitting show per-serving and per-package columns.
- Type-size and format minimums: each element carries its own minimum sizes and styling; small packages may qualify for tabular or linear formats.

Getting panel artwork print-ready
One rule outranks the rest here: the panel must be vector type, never a screenshot or a low-res export from a nutrition calculator. Flattened panels blur at press resolution and they’re the single most common file problem we repair. Send yours anyway and prepress rebuilds it as clean type. Semi-gloss paper or white film, laminated for handling, die-cut to your package, and wound for your line. The vector rebuild is the step most shops skip, and it is the one that keeps panels legible.

When a multi-serving package could plausibly be consumed in one sitting, the panel shows both per-serving and per-container columns. We build the dual-column layout when your product falls in that range.
Is my business exempt from nutrition labeling?
Some small businesses qualify for exemptions based on sales and employee counts. That determination belongs to your regulatory advisor. When you do label, we make sure the panel is built to the current format.
Why does my current panel look blurry on press?
Almost always because the panel went in as a flattened image. We rebuild panels as clean vector type so hairline rules and small print stay sharp.
What file format does panel artwork need?
Vector everything, especially the panel. PDF, AI, or EPS at 300 dpi in CMYK with bleed; calculator screenshots get rebuilt as live type in prepress.
