Cosmetics have their own FDA labeling framework, and it’s stricter than most founders expect. Here’s how each element lands on the label:
- Identity and net contents up front: what the product is and how much is in it, on the principal display panel, with net contents in the correct units.
- Ingredient declaration: every ingredient in descending order of predominance using INCI names, at the required legibility.
- Name and address: the manufacturer, packer, or distributor line, with “distributed by” phrasing where that’s the relationship.
- Warnings where applicable: category-specific cautionary statements set conspicuously.
- Claims discipline: a moisturizer that “hydrates” is a cosmetic; one that claims to “treat eczema” or carries SPF has become a drug with a different label. We flag claim language that changes your product’s regulatory identity.

On a small component the INCI list is the artwork problem: we check minimum type sizes and stroke weights so the declaration prints legible instead of technically-present. Around it, the file needs a die drawn to the actual component, a safe zone holding the list off the trim, bleed, and vector construction (PDF, AI, or EPS) at 300 dpi in CMYK. Prepress preps anything that isn’t there yet.
